The Mars Volta
The Bedlam in Goliath

Universal Records
Rating: 3 out of 5
By: Kelly Reed

The Bedlam in Goliath is a never-ending source of energy and mayhem produced by the members of The Mars Volta. With their fifth release it is hard to believe that they still haven't lost their manic edge. As they intertwine parts of post-hardcore and intense rock there is little doubt that the fans of The Mars Volta will be impressed with their latest album. Their songs are littered with religious icons and biblical stories. Even the title of the album, Bedlam in Goliath is a possible allusion to the great giant of the biblical tale David and Goliath. However, not every song on this album is pulsing with energy, but it's refreshing as they slow down on their sixth track “Tourniquet Man” even if it is only for one song. As the sixth track ends it once again picks up speed carries on as if nothing happened. Some of the best tracks off this album includes, “Ilyena,” “Cavalettas,” and “Ouroborous.” Each of these songs demonstrates the range in which this pair can play and it is absolutely fantastic. I have personally been a fan of The Mars Volta since I first heard them in my friend's van on our way to the skate park four years ago. There is something about them that I just can not shake. Their voices are so intense and different when compared to main stream sound. You can tell that they throw everything they have into their music and it becomes almost overwhelming at some points. If there was anything that I am disappointed in with this album it would be the lack of Spanish, and the occasional over the top unnecessary electronic guitar pedal and sound manipulators. Besides this I The Mars Volta have yet again produced quality music that fans all around can enjoy.
