With all the hype surrounding the second release from Montreal super-group the Arcade Fire there were worries that it would not live up to its expectations, but at first listen it could already be told that the band and their Neon Bible deserve the excitement they are receiving. The band’s first album, Funeral, was nominated for best alternative album at the Grammy Awards in 2004 so Win Butler and crew have been under a lot of pressure to have as good or a better follow-up album.
Though this Neon Bible is a little gothic sounding at times the production and arrangements keep the listener in good spirits all the way through. By listening to the song “No Cars Go” you can hear how the band has made a lot of progress from their first EP, where this song originally appeared. It is kind of strange to cover yourself only two albums into your career, but the song is so well orchestrated and performed that this only proves that we have not heard the last from this great band.
In what seems to be this dance-based, electronic music industry it is good to hear a seven-member band that can all play their instruments so well. Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible is sure to make headlines and charts over the next few weeks and even months. This is the type of album that grows on you until you memorize all of its carefully selected lyrics.
Neon Bible is due out March 6th in the USA.
