This debut album from Manhattan’s Marnie Stern proves one thing: this girl can shred. After being introduced to the finger tapping technique of guitar by a Don Caballero video, she spent some years of her life working on perfecting the art. In Advance of the Broken Arm is along the ilk of Hella, this would make sense in that the album was produced by and features the drum expertise of Hella’s Zach Hill. Written over a two-year span in Marnie’s bedroom, In Advance of the Broken Arm can be challenging, intense, beautiful, and down right noisy. Accompanied by her powerful female vocals, her guitar work is by far what sticks out as a high point of this album. Immediately reminiscent of Hella and San Diego’s Kill Me Tomorrow; this album does not disappoint for those of you who are looking to move to a different beat.
