Describing the band Beach House might seem easy, but it is hard to sum up all of their talent in just a few words. Beach House embodies something like the low sound of wind blowing through a mountain valley. This album is very earthy and melodic. Victoria Legrand's voice echoes through the air as she sings. So, with this in mind Beach House's album Devotion, which came out late February, is without doubt a very beautiful, melodic, and well crafted piece of art. Old fans of Beach House will not be disappointed, and the new ones will be just as loyal. Legrand’s voice is well paired with the vintage sound of the organ, which is played by Alex Scally who also happens to be her partner in crime. The sound of their album is very dream like and soft, which carries mysterious tones. Out of the eleven tracks on this record, there are two that stand out the most. These two excellent songs are “Turtle Island” and “Some Things Last A Long Time.” The song “Turtle Island” Legrand's voice makes her sound very isolated and alone. The tempo to the song is slow, but it only enhances its quality. The other song “Some Things Last A Long Time,” has an increible rich sound to it, that is at least partly do to Scally's skills pertaining to the organ. The rainsticks are also a nice touch. Keep listening to the rest of the album though, to stop on just these two tracks. Listen to the lyrics, notice Legrand's inflections as she sings, and hear how the instrumentals interlace with the vocals. All together it is a fantastic album that needs to be heard.
