Do yourself a favor and turn your speakers up and give Be Your Own Pet's latest album a spin. Jemina Pearl the lead singer of BYOP will knock you down as she spits, sings, and screams the band's lyrics from their second album Get Awkward. They are an extremely raw garage style punk band, which embodies a similar spirit that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs possessed in their younger days. Their lyrics are as catchy as their guitar and bass lines, which are happily provided by Jonas Stein and Nathan Vasquez. As John Eatherly drums the beat your feet will keep hoppin' and they all scream “Food Fight!” So, please just listen and consume everything this band feeds you. If you are disappointed by how short the album feels it isn't BYOP's fault, three of their awesome tracks were cut from this album. Their UK version of the record has all fifteen songs, while the US album only has twelve. You can thank Universal Records for this last minute cut. The three songs that were cut were deemed to violent for audiences to hear, even though the album already carries the Parental Advisory on the outer portion of the CD case. The only other thing I was shocked about was is how young this group is and how far they have come in such a short amount of time. They have been together for less than five years and have already produced two full-lengths out of Nashville, Tennessee. As we speak they are on their world tour, and will be in the Midwest my mid July. These kids better stick around for a long time so we can see even more of their awesome talent. Until we get another album, sit down and listen to their tracks “Super Soaked,” “Heart Throb,” “Food Fight!,” and “Zombie Graveyard Party!” It might be the best thing you ever did.
